Farndale and Friends Walking Group

A walking group has been set up to bring people together for a local walk and then chance for a cup of tea and chat afterward.

The walk organiser Jo Loggie set the first walk for Saturday 17th July round the Daffy Walk.  12 people turned out for the afternoon and it ended up being a really hot summer’s day, but with a nice breeze thankfully!

In August, the  walk was on the railway line, with a picnic at the Esklets Crossing, back down to the road and to the Village Hall, for a cuppa afterward.  September’s walk joined the Church group Pilgrimage to St Nicholas Church in Bransdale – up Monket Bank over the moor, and via Bransdale Mill.   After the Church service and some delicious cake and refreshment, the group walked back to Farndale.  October’s walk was along the Rosedale railway line, back across the dale via the cafe for tea & cakes!  The walk in November was cancelled unfortunately as the weather was bad.

December’s walk was on the 30th, with a record 29 people joining in!  We walked round the daffy walk again for a shorter walk to blow the Christmas cobwebs away, followed by a cuppa and a mince pie in the Hall.  January’s walk was further afield – from Gillamoor round by Kirkbymoorside on a circular route.  Unfortunately the walk in February was cancelled due to poor weather.

In March, the walk was on a beautiful day – Sunday 6th.  The route started at the Village Hall, went up Monket Bank and across the moor.  After a lovely picnic, back down via Horn End and then back to Church Houses.

Also in March, some people joined in with the annual Marie Curie walk organised by the local Marie Curie fundraising group.  Each year there are two walks, one along the Daffy Walk; plus a longer one around 7 miles.  In early April the walk took place on an evening, with a circular walk at the bottom end of the dale through the daffodils down near Lowna and Hagg Wood.

The group generally meets up at the Village Hall and pop in there afterwards for a cup of tea and a chat about future walks – so a donation is welcome at this point.

Come along if you fancy it, everyone is welcome!   Please bring a picnic.  Dogs are welcome too.

The group is open to ideas of different days, times and lengths of walks as well as levels of difficulty. Please email Jo for more info or if you want to suggest anything.  Email – loggjoan@aol.com

Next dates :

Saturday 14th May – 1.45pm meeting at Church Houses, to car share further up the dale to hopefully see some bluebells.  Discussions will be had a the picnic/snack-stop about where and when the next walks will be.
